Superman Returns
After eliminating General Zod & the other Kryptonian arch-villains, Ursa & Non, Superman leaves Earth to try to find his former home world of Krypton after astronomers have supposedly found it. When he finds nothing but remnants, he returns home to Earth - to find out that Lois Lane is engaged to a relative of his boss, and that Lex Luthor is at it again - after swindling an elderly, terminally ill woman. The psychopathic Luthor, whose plans to destroy California failed because of Superman's heroics, vows vengeance against the Man of Steel and contrives a new sinister plot - using the crystals of Krypton to build a continent that will wipe out most of North America! Embedded in the continent's structure is Kryptonite - the lethal substance that is Superman's only weakness. Upon learning of Luthro's sinister scheme, Superman must again race against time to stop the psychopathic Luthor before millions - possibly billions - are killed.

Clerks II
The sequel picks up 10 years later. "It's about what happens when that lazy, 20-something malaise lasts into your 30s. Those dudes are kind of still mired, not in that same exact situation, but in a place where it's time to actually grow up and do something more than just sit around and dissect pop culture and talk about sex," Smith said during an interview at his Hollywood office. "It's: What happened to these dudes?"

The Da Vinci Code
While in Paris on business, Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon is informed that the elderly curator of the Louvre has been murdered inside the museum. Near the body, police have found a baffling cipher. Solving the enigmatic riddle, Langdon is stunned to discover it leads to a trail of clues hidden in the works of Da Vinci - clues visible for all to see, and yet ingeniously disguised by the painter. Langdon joins forces with a gifted French cryptologist, Sophie Neveu, and learns the late curator was involved in the Priory of Sion - an actual secret society. In a breathless race through Paris, London and beyond, Langdon and Neveu match wits with a faceless power broker who appears to work for Opus Dei - a clandestine, Vatican-sanctioned Catholic organization believed to have long plotted to seize the Priory's secret. Unless Langdon and Neveu can decipher the labyrinthine puzzle in time, the Priory's secret - and a stunning historical truth - will be lost forever.

John Tucker Must Die
Three teenagers two-timed by a local lothario decide to turn the tables on him in this romantic comedy. John Tucker (Jesse Metcalfe) is the big man on campus at his high school -- he's the captain and star player of the basketball team, he's got money, he's good-looking and charming, and he can have any girl he wants. However, the latter attribute is about to get him in serious trouble when three different girls at his school -- Heather (Ashanti), Beth (Sophia Bush) and Carrie (Arielle Kebbel) -- discover they've all been dating John at the same time. Determined to bring down the campus ladykiller, the girls devise a plan -- they pick a cute but socially clumsy girl who is new at school, Kate (Brittany Snow), and give her a crash course in stealing John's heart. Once Kate has John wrapped around her little finger, she's supposed to drop him like a bad habit and give him a taste of what heartbreak is really like. However, it seems that the early stages of the plan work a little too well, and John and Kate end up falling for each other for real. John Tucker Must Die also stars Jenny McCarthy, Penn Badgley, and Dan Payne.

Accepted
Bartleby (B.) Gaines is a fun loving slacker who, unfortunately, gets turned down for every college he applied for, much to the charign of his overly expectant parents. So, with a little cutting and pasting, he creates the South Harmon Institute of Technology, and lo and behold, he is accepted (along with his friends Rory, Hands, and Glen, whose college plans were also all but dashed). However, his parents want to see the website, the campus, and the dean. So now he has his other friend Sherman (who has been accepted to the prestigious Harmon College) build a web page, they lease out an abandoned psychiatric hospital, and they hire Sherman's uncle Ben (played to perfection by comedian Lewis Black) to be the dean. Problem solved? Not quite. The web page was done so well, that hundreds of students show up at the front door, all of which were turned down by other colleges. Faced with no choice, Bartleby decides to proceed with turning South Harmon into a real college, and sets about figuring out what to teach and how to teach it. Meanwhile at Harmon, dean Van Horne meets with Hoyt Ambrose, a rich law student and head of the KBE fraternity (which Sherman is trying to become a member of), to discuss building a gateway for Harmon using land presently being used by South Harmon. He tries finding the leaseholder of the land, to no avail. Meanwhile, his girlfriend, Monica, catches him cheating on her, and a big party at South Harmon lures a chunk of Harmon's students away, including Monica into the arms of Bartleby. Now Hoyt uses Sherman, knowing he has been bouncing between the two schools, in an attempt to bring South Harmon down for good. However, Bartleby has an accreditation appointment with the state Board of Education to prove South Harmon's worthiness. Can he legally bring the South Harmon Institute of Technology to life and win the love of Monica?

Over the long weekend that follows, a burgeoning romance and discovery of a mysterious notebook draw Catherine into the most difficult problem of all: How much of her father's madness-or genius- will she inherit?

French Movie @ IIC living room

it is the International Education Week and the French Club has come up with the idea to show a French movie tonight (Tuesday) in the IIC living room. The movie deals with French culture and Indochinese culture at the same time, and sets the roots of the American War of Vietnam.

Twenty years before the United States lost the war in Vietnam, the exact same thing happened to the French army. This time was pretty hard for France and for Indochina, and mostly for Eliane (Catherine Deneuve), a French woman owning a plantation there, and Camille (Linh Dan Pham), her adopted vietnamese daughter.
And everything goes a lot more complicated when both of them fall in love with the same French officer Jean-Baptiste (Vincent Perez).

The movie won one American Academy Award (oscar) and five French Academy Awards (cesar) in 1993. Linh Dan Pham won a French Academy Award in 2006.

The movie is subtitled in English and the movie will be shown today, Tuesday, November 14 at 7 P.M.

Scratch Track at Wednesdays Live

Acoustic hip-hop duo Scratch Track will perform at The Station this coming Wednesday, the show will start at 8 p.m.

The two-man band consists of DJ Lee on vocals and beatbox, and Jason Hamlin on guitar.

"Acoustic Hip-Hop Soul" is the best way to describe the musical anomaly that is - Scratch Track"

Start with a vocal beatbox and layer some guitar on top. Throw in a bit of funk, folk, rock, gospel, and rap, and you've got a band that has it all... but doesn't sound like anything you've heard before.

Scratch Track began crafting their fresh sound in 2000, mixing rapid-fire lyrics, street poetry, rich harmonies, virtuoso guitars, and explosive percussive vocals to create one of the most unique sounds to hit the music scene in many years.

The Wednesdays Live concert series is sponsored by Northwest's Student Activities Council.

Cars
Successful rookie racer Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson) has, to his pleasure, just won a 3-way tie with elder rival Chick Hicks (Michael Keaton) and champ "The King" (Richard Petty), but is also proud and unappreciative of long-time (mostly older) supporters enough to have his ignored pit-crew desert him. Accidentally lost en route to California for the tie-breaker, he crashes through Radiator Springs on Route 66, destroying the road and some property. Forced to remain in town until he repairs them, he's stuck in a small community whose tight-knit inhabitants accept neither his selfishness nor bad attitude. Refusing to respect them initially, he eventually returns the friendship of redneck Mater (Larry the Cable Guy) and falls in love with Sally (Bonnie Hunt), but can't seem to get gruff Doc Hudson (Paul Newman), who keeps a painful secret, to change his mind about him. Soon Lightning learns the inhabitants of the town as a whole, who are almost a secret to the outside world, also had a past now painfully absent, and tries to help them enjoy it once more.

Congrats to the Football team

Congratulation to the football team on beating Pitt State today at Arrowhead Stadium.

The final score was 41-14, which brings the win loss record for the Fall Classic to 3-2 for Northwest.

Xavier Omon did not play, but both Cook and Gregg had a great game day rushing against the still struggling Pitt State defense.

More on this game later.

Fall Classic V at Arrowhead Stadium

Saturday will be the fifth time in a row that Northwest and Pitt State will meet each other on neutral ground, but how did it all start?

In 2002 Northwest was suppose to play Pitt State during their homecoming game, but construction to Beacat Stadium would allow only a few people to be seated. Northwest went looking for another location and approached the Kansas City Chiefs and asked them if they could rent Arrowhead Stadium. The year after, 2003, Pitt State decided to do the same, and rented Arrowhead. After those two years, the two universities signed a two year contract with the Chiefs. Because of the success of this game, that contract has been renewed for another two years, with Saturday's game being the first game of that renewed contract.

The first year the game was called "Clash of Champions," and was later renamed to the current name, "Fall Classic at Arrowhead". The game has attracted an average of 23,401 fans since the first game in 2002. During that first year the two universities set a Division II single-game attendance record with 26,695 fans attending.

This year's game will be one of those games a Bearcat fan cannot miss. Pitt State is fighting to keep their playoff hopes alive, and Northwest is trying to remain undefeated. Another interesting fact is that Northwest has not trailed in a single game yet this year. Northwest is considered as the home team this year.

Results of past games:

Under Review: Cary Judd, Live!

Hot out of the concert, and I'm just wishing for more. For the second time, Cary Judd makes a stop at Northwest Missouri State University, and I only wish he would've had a better audience.

Cary Judd is one of the best performers I have ever seen in concert. True to his vocals and his style, Judd delivered a performance that is unique and of a caliber rarely found in college, let alone commercial, concerts.

To watch Cary perform is to see a man, not only passionate about his work, but also a master of his art. He usually begins by laying down a beat track from his snare drum. His effects machine records the track and begins to play it back immediately. From there, he begins beating the bass line softly from his guitar. Once it's added to the mix, he sometimes will add a rhythm guitar track, but just as often he'll jump into his song.

His lyrics are evocative. Make no mistake, they are simple, but they carry a weight in the presentation, and his delivery makes everyone know that this is his music, his creation.

An enjoyable concert, and all around amazing performance, Judd is worth having back, and well worth the hour and a half length.

Students can't vote on campus for mid-term voting

Northwest Students will have to go into town to vote for the mid-term voting this year. This is due to the low amount of students that are registered to vote. Whether this is a wise decision is yet to be determent for the actual turn out might even be lower because of this.

Students who want to take the extra step have to go to the First Christian Church to vote for the Mid-term elections on Nov. 7. The polls are open from 6 a.m. till 7 p.m.

Students that are not registered to vote in Maryville can travel home and vote at their county office on Saturday Nov. 4 from 8 a.m. till noon. This only applies to students that are from Missouri.

Student wanting a ride to the polls on Tuesday can either e-mail the Student Affairs office or call them at 562-1242.

X106 filling you up!

X106 is doing a special to get you cheap to the Arrowhead game. They are going to fill up your car with gas if you are one of the first 106 cars to come to hy-vee at 7:00 P.M. on Thursday November 2.

The catch however is that you need a sticker on your car. You can get the sticker by either listening to X106 or by going to "Weekend Sports Kick Off" at Carson's Thursday from 5-7 P.M.

X might be back, coach changed his mind

That's the latest news. According to coach Mel Tjeedsma it's going to be a game day decision whether Omon plays during the Fall Classic V at Arrowhead Saturday or not.

During practise on Monday both Brant Gregg and Sheldon Cook did some plays at the position of running back. Rumour also has it that tight end Mike Peterson could play at the running back position.

Tuesday, October 31, 2006

X's out for now

18 Yards is what X (Xavier Omon) needs for another 1,000-rushing yards season. One thing is for sure though, he won't get those yards coming Saturday against those damn Monkeys!

Last week X fractured a rib during the game against UCM (University of Complete Morons). X rushed for 166 yards on 23 carries during that game earning him the MIAA Offensive Player of the Week.

X's backup, LaRon Council left the game with a broken leg. His injury was far worst and required surgery. He's out for the season.

Brant Gregg will most likely start in Saturdays game. X is out for at least a few weeks.

Leave the Drinking...To Us

A letter, in response to the Article "Leave the drinking for after parents leave"

Homecoming...*sigh*...a time honored tradition of alcohol and school pride. Don't blame the participants, blame society! Hell, blame the generations of the 60's and 70's who's culture of abuse still plagues us today...oh wait, unless I'm mistaken, that's who we need to protect.

I spent the entire parade stationed on Fourth Street, just down from Bearcat Express. Let me tell you, it was cold and miserable, so I can honestly say, "I've never seen so few drunk people before 10 a.m. on a homecoming weekend." Giant gaps lined Fourth and clumps of people were few and far between.

But back to the serious reality of the situation; shouldn't we, the students, be responsible for protecting the 40-somethings and up? Shouldn't we drink behind closed doors, acting like we have something to hide? Isn't it better if we hide society's flaws rather than flaunting them? I mean, hiding a problem is more than adequate when dealing with it; i.e. anyone find any WMDs lately?

I'd imagine that over the homecoming weekend, they didn't see anything they hadn't seen, possibly even partaken in, once or twice before. I can't imagine that anyone over 30 has ever partaken in the debauchery that occurred during homecoming. That's just unthinkable. Although...unless I'm mistaken, their college years are about the time students would go streaking across campus on Walkout Day. But I'm sure no alcohol was involved in that little stunt, it was just innocent silliness.

But for real-real, I suppose parents could take their children on campus, where alcohol is prohibited, but in my opinion, they decide to stay in the midst of drunkenness out of a sense of nostalgia. A, "Oh, to be young-again" mentality. If they were truly offended by the alcohol, there was about a quarter of a mile stretch up Fourth that was absolutely sober, and a relatively short walk.

As for a kegger, I didn't see the keg, but I wish I had. I was out of hooch by the time the D-Chi Float meandered by.

So I challenge everyone to take part of Living History. Go out and enjoy Northwest. Enjoy drinking with your comrades, and enjoy attending a game w/o alcohol (by the way, how many "events" do you think homecoming entails?). It's about being a twenty something in a time clearly devoid of character and originality. What else do you expect us to do at homecoming, research for an opinion piece?

Cary Judd at Wednesdays Live

Wednesday November 1 guitarist Cary Judd will perform at The Station. The concert will start at 8 p.m. and it's free!

Cary's live show is deceptively understated-just a man and a guitar. But what you see is not what you get. He starts by playing a riff or progression that finds itself embellished in a swirl of drum and guitar loops that he masterfully creates with a series of electronic pedals at his feet. His stage demeanor will make you feel like you're having a conversation and a good laugh with an old familiar friend. Cary impressively redefines the one-man-show.

The Wednesdays Live concert series is sponsored by Northwest's Student Activities Council.
